Our Top 8 Tips for Your First Floatation

If you’ve never tried floating in a sensory deprivation tank, then you’re in for a treat.

Thankfully it’s not difficult, but there are some tips that every newbie will want to know to ensure their first experience goes smoothly.

  1. Don’t have too much food in your stomach to ensure you don’t feel uncomfortable or bloated, and try not to drink too much water beforehand to ensure you don’t have to take lots of bathroom breaks.

  2. Avoiding caffeine is a good idea to increase the ease of relaxation and focus, as well as helping to enjoy the comfort of remaining still.

  3. Focus only on your breathing to redeem the maximum benefit from your floatation. The aim is to relax and reach a meditative state, but don’t overthink it because that will likely have the opposite effect.

  4. Ensure you have a shower before you hop in the tank, but make sure you take a luke-warm shower. If your shower is too hot, then your tank water will feel uncomfortably cold!

  5. Floatation tanks have about 500kg of Epsom salts in them, so don’t shave beforehand - your skin will sting in the salty water. For the same reason, try not to touch your face or eyes when in the water either. Keep a towel nearby just in case you need to wipe your eyes.

  6. Allow enough time after your appointment to wake yourself back up slowly. You’ll often feel drowsy, and being in a rush after your session can make you feel overwhelmed and undo all your good relaxation work. Allowing enough time to have a hot shower, a cup of herbal tea and a sit-down to collect your thoughts should be factored into your experience.

  7. Earplugs will be provided to you, which should be used for the entire session for your comfort. Getting salt in your ears can be uncomfortable so it’s wise to fit them carefully.

  8. In terms of attire, it’s recommended to wear as little as you’re comfortable with to avoid irritation, discomfort or distraction in the water. Going nude or as close to it as you’re comfortable with is ideal for floatation sessions.
